"Clean the fans" is the answer you'll find everywhere, and it's often right — but it's not the whole picture, and doing it wrong (or doing it when the real problem is something else) wastes your time. This walks through diagnosing what's actually happening before you open anything up.
First, Confirm It's Actually Thermal
Not every random shutdown is heat-related. Before you touch the laptop's internals, rule out the alternatives:
- Instant power-off with no warning, screen goes black immediately — classic thermal shutdown (a safety cutoff to protect the CPU) or a battery/power problem.
- Blue screen with an error code, then restart — this is a crash, not a thermal shutdown; the cause is more likely a driver or hardware fault. Note the error code (

Step 1: Actually Measure the Temperature
Don't guess — install a free monitoring tool (HWMonitor or HWiNFO) and watch CPU package temperature while you use the laptop normally until it gets close to shutting down (or until it clearly throttles). If you see CPU temps sitting above 95-100°C right before a shutdown, that confirms thermal protection is kicking in. If temps stay moderate (60-70s) and it shuts down anyway, stop here — this isn't a heat problem, and cleaning/repasting won't fix it. If cleaning didn't bring temps down enough, and the laptop is old enough that this is plausible, repasting is the next step. This requires removing the heatsink assembly entirely (more screws, sometimes requires disconnecting the fan's power cable), cleaning off the old paste with isopropyl alcohol, and applying a small pea-sized amount of new paste before reseating.
