An SSD (solid state drive) is the part of a computer that stores your files, apps, and operating system permanently — the same job a traditional hard drive does, but built with completely different technology.

What Makes It Different From a Hard Drive?

A traditional hard drive (HDD) stores data on a spinning magnetic disk, read by a physical arm that moves back and forth — similar in principle to a record player. An SSD has no moving parts at all: it stores data in flash memory chips, the same family of technology used in USB drives and phone storage, just built for much higher speed and durability.

Why Does It Make a Computer Feel Faster?

Because there's no physical arm that has to move to the right spot on a disk, an SSD can read and write data almost instantly, regardless of where it's stored. A hard drive has to physically seek to the right location first — the "spin up and load" delay you feel when opening a program from an HDD is that seeking process. This is why swapping a boot drive from an HDD to an SSD is one of the single biggest speed upgrades ordinary computers can get.

Are All SSDs the Same?

No — there are two common types:

  • SATA SSDs — use the same connector/interface as older hard drives, making them an easy drop-in upgrade. Fast compared to an HDD, but capped by that older interface's speed limit.
  • NVMe SSDs — connect directly to a faster internal interface (usually M.2), several times quicker than SATA SSDs. This is what most new laptops and desktops ship with today.
The One Number Worth Knowing Design Capacity vs actual usable space always differs slightly — that's normal, not a defect. SSDs do wear out with heavy write use, but for typical everyday use this takes many years to matter. A drive being "full" slows it down more than an HDD would notice — keeping some free space matters more on an SSD.
